There’s a lot of misinformation out there about home security systems. Some people think they’re too expensive, while others believe they’re not effective. The truth about home security systems is that they can be a great investment, providing peace of mind and protecting your home and family.

5 Common Myths and the Truth About Home Security Systems

There’s no such thing as being too safe when it comes to your property, possessions, and family. That’s why many people choose to install home security systems. However, there are a few myths to bust before making this investment.

Myth #1: Home Security Systems Don’t Work to Deter and Prevent Crime

While no security system is 100% crime-proof, they provide an extra layer of protection. The truth about home security systems is that they can effectively deter criminals and alert you to potential threats. One study surveying 422 incarcerated male and female burglars found that 83% look to see if there’s an alarm, and 60% would not burglarize a home if there were one. Just the presence of a security system works to deter and prevent crime.

Myth #2: Home Security Systems are too Expensive

Most people think all security systems come with a high price tag, often too high for most to afford. The truth about home security systems is that they vary greatly in price, depending on the features you want and the size of your home. You can find home security companies that offer “build your own” system packages, so you only pay for the items you want and need. Additionally, most companies offer financing options that make it easy to get started with a system, and many insurance companies offer discounts for homes with security systems. By comparing your options, you can find a system that fits your budget.

Myth #3: Home Security Systems are too Complicated

If you’re not tech-savvy, you may think that purchasing, installing, and using a home security system is too complicated. The truth about home security systems is that they are more user-friendly than ever. If you want a hands-off installation experience, you can choose a security company that offers professional installation. Additionally, selecting a company with highly rated customer support will help you use your security system with ease.

Myth #4: Home Security Systems Don’t Work in Apartments

Just because you live in an apartment rather than a house doesn’t mean you can’t secure your space. Nowadays, security companies create specific products with renters in mind. This includes battery-operated cameras that don’t require hardwiring and DIY solutions that you can take with you when you move. Myth #5: Home Security Systems are No Better than a Guard Dog

While having a guard dog might deter criminals from breaking into your home, it’s not always the case. There may be times your dog is sleeping or is out of town on vacation with you, leaving your home vulnerable to crime. Having a home security system ensures your home is protected at all times, even when you’re sleeping or away, with 24/7 professional monitoring. In addition, many security systems offer mobile apps that allow you to check in on your home from anywhere.
