Going on vacation is supposed to be a time to relax and decompress from the stresses of daily life. However, many people worry about home security while they’re away. Here are a few simple steps for how to secure your home while on vacation to help keep your home safe while you’re enjoying some time off.
This may seem like an obvious step, but it’s often overlooked in the excitement of packing for vacation. However, if you have smart locks installed on your exterior doors, you can lock and unlock them remotely, so you don’t have to turn the car around to double-check. Also, don’t forget about your garage–make sure it is shut and all interior and exterior doors are locked with a deadbolt.
An overflowing mailbox is a dead giveaway that nobody is home and could entice a would-be criminal. You can contact USPS and have them hold your mail until you return. Or, you can ask a trusted neighbor to collect it for you. In addition, don’t schedule any package deliveries during your time away.
If you have a home security system with smart lighting, you can set a timer for your interior and exterior lights to turn on and off at certain times. Having interior lights turn on at night gives the appearance of someone being home even when nobody is, which can deter criminals. And outdoor lights create a non-ideal environment for breaking and entering.
Burglars know where to look to find spare keys near your front or back door, so don’t risk it. If you need someone to have access to your home while you’re away, deliver the spare key to them in person before you leave. Or, if you have a smart lock, set a unique passcode for certain visitors for keyless entry.
While it may be tempting to let your Instagram followers or Facebook friends see what you’re up to during your time away, posting online is not a good idea when you’re not home. If the wrong person catches wind that your home is unoccupied, it increases the likelihood of a burglary. 66% of burglars know their victims, and a would-be criminal may follow your social accounts. If you want to proactively secure your home while on vacation, don’t post about it until you’re back.
Having a home security system is one of the best ways for how to secure your home while on vacation. A team of trained security agents will constantly be on the lookout for suspicious activity at your property, and they will immediately contact the authorities if they see anything out of the ordinary. You’ll also get notified and can check your security cameras for footage of the suspect on your smartphone. So whether you’re gone for a weekend or a week, you can rest assured that your home is in good hands.
It’s essential to take some simple precautions to secure your home before leaving for a trip. By following the tips for how to secure your home while on vacation, you can help deter burglars and keep your property safe while you’re away. You can’t be everywhere at once, but with the help of a home security system with 24/7 professional monitoring, you can relax and enjoy your vacation, knowing that your home is safe and sound.
